It's like a much improved version of the iPad case, with better looks, better protection, and better options for using it as a stand. And while it's certainly a little bulkier than the apple case, it's not nearly as bulky as other portfolio cases that I've used (like the Marware Ecovue or M-Edge). The Scosche holds the iPad firmly in place by two stiff tabs that clamp the iPad in place from the top and bottom, while the corners just keep it aligned and protect the corners. The lid closes and stays closed by use of a similar tab. Over time this lid tab may become looser and not hold in place as well, but only time will tell.
With the lid open in a vertical position, it's not entirely comfortable to hold because the lid does not fold back completely flat against the back, but it's not too bad. Where the case really shines though is in horizontal mode, where the iPad can be propped up in four different positions. This is great for using around the home or on a plane for watching video, and it's especially good at a coffee shop when using it with an external keyboard. It can also recline in a fifth position that is optimal for typing (about 30 degree angle) on the screen directly, but in this position the iPad is a little springy. The great advantage of all of these options is hat the interior of the case never touches the surface, which means it's less likely to transfer dirt or breadcrumbs to the iPads screen when closed.
The carbon fiber look of the case is handsome, and it feels nice. Not much grippy texture, but not too slick. Overall it retains the ipad's inherent sleek and light feel while offering decent protection at a reasonable price. For anyone looking for a case they can throw in a bag but still use in normal circumstances without removing it from the case, I highly recommend this one.
