The iPad is special, and it needs special power adaptors. Plug an iPad into an old iPhone power adaptor and the adaptor is likely to start smoking--this actually happened to me. You need an adaptor rated at 2.1 Amps which can deliver the 10W an iPad requires with a little margin to spare.
I visited the Apple website and my local Apple store, and they both carry two iPad auto adaptors, a Belkin PowerJolt, and this Kensington PowerBolt. I chose the PowerBolt for its compact design which does not project far out of my car's power socket. Unfortunately, this strength is also a liability as it is hard to grasp the device and remove it once inserted, or even rotate it once it's in. The other adaptor, the Belkin, at least has plenty of material to yank when removing. However, this is not a big deal for me, as I go years between removing the charger, but it might affect you.
Other than the difficulty in removing, this is a perfectly fine charger, and I intend to use it daily with my iPhone and occasionally with my iPad.
