(More customer reviews)UPDATE: Nov. 1, 2010 (exactly 3 months after purchase):
I still very much like the design of the product. However, now that it has seen three months of use, I've determined the quality of construction is terrible. The biggest problem is the cover that goes over the screen. Inside, the soft fabric cover is a flimsy piece of cardboard of some kind where a sturdy piece of plastic should be. This piece provides the support for the iPad in the standing position. Using whatever flimsy material they used, means that within three months that cover piece bows flexes to where it no longer provides support for the iPad in the standing position. As a result, the case becomes essentially worthless. I would give this product five stars, if it's construction was of a higher-quality. If I had known what poor quality it would be when I bought it, I'd wouldn't pay more than $5-$10 for it--because at this rate, I'd be replacing it 4x/yr.
-------------------------------------
Just about all the iPad cases are too thick and bulky for me. To me, the iPad has a certain elegance to it, and I want to keep it that way. I use Bodyguardz thin-film protection on front & back, but still want *something* in the way of a cover/case, mostly for additional protection of the screen (which rules out the "back cover only" type cases). Unfortunately, there are only 2 cases I'm aware of which do this without adding significant bulk--I want a "barely there" kind of case. One is Apple's own case--and it works great, but its difficult to insert and remove, and it also is made in a way that creates a sharp-edged seam around the outside edges--and that's uncomfortable to hold upright when reading. But I lived with it, until I cam across the Macally Bookstand cover, and I kinda waited for the "Black" version because the light gray didn't appeal to me (and I thought it would get dirty easily).
First things first: I really like the design. The "4 corners" approach for holding the iPad in there works very well and holds very securely. It is easy both to insert, and also remove--important if, like me, you want to sometimes either hold it without a cover, or insert the iPad into something else (I have stands/holders from Ram Mounts in both my car and airplane where I also want to use the iPad). Its also important to me to have a case that acts as a self-standing device, so I can watch videos on the iPad while I'm shaving & etc. in the morning. The Macally does that almost as well as the Apple case. Its just a little awkward to "thread" the tongue flap into a slot to accomplish that (I think the Apple design works better there--more elegant).
My beef? The whole case is lined with a kind of soft, flimsy, micro-fiber material which not only is very hard to keep clean (its like a dust rag--picks up everything), but also fails to adhere well to the plastic frame it is attached to. So the "hinge" area, although physically holding up just fine, has the edges of this material coming off of it. I think I can glue it back down, but I shouldn't have to. This is either a design flaw or shoddy workmanship--not sure which.
All in all, I like it. And I haven't gone back to the Apple case, so I must prefer it. Its the best case overall for me, despite its imperfections. I would give it 4 stars if the material didn't detach from the frame. And 4 1/2 stars if the material didn't get so dirty all the time (and is so difficult to clean off). 5 stars if that odd tongue-flap thing were easier to deal with in the standing position. Otherwise I really like the product and I hope Macally is listening so they improve it to a better standard--I'll get the new, improved version.
